Unleashing Creativity at SpudBot Academy Day 2: Introduction to Programming

At SpudBot Academy, summer camp excitement is at an all-time high! On Day 2, campers dove into the fantastic world of programming with their very own mBot robots. Utilizing mBlock—a free, open-source software based on Scratch—young minds transformed their ideas into reality. With its user-friendly drag-and-drop interface, kids found it easy to control their little robots, and the energy in the room was electric!

Campers kick-started the day with a fun icebreaker designed to spark collaboration and creativity. The counselors worked hard to ensure every camper felt included and energized for the day’s activities.

As friendships blossomed, cheers and laughter filled the air, capturing the quintessential spirit of summer camp!

Discovering the Joy of Programming

Once the ice was broken, campers were introduced to the basics of programming their mBots. The morning challenge was straightforward yet inspiring: use mBlock to program the robots to perform various movements and tasks.

With the counselors guiding them, the kids quickly learned how to navigate the software. They created sequences of commands, directing their bots to move forward and backward, turn, and spin. The joy on their faces as they watched their mBots spring to life was infectious, with cheers erupting for every successful maneuver!

Each camper had the opportunity to explore their creativity and add unique spins to their programming. Some campers began working through a maze with their mBot had to navigate, while others choreographed dance routines or showcased stunts. It's remarkable how technology combined with imagination can create endless possibilities!

The Algae Bowling Extravaganza

After a morning filled with coding excitement, it was time for a fun break! The counselors organized a game of Algae Bowling using game pieces from the Reefscape competition season.

What a brilliant way to reinforce their skills! Campers lined up with the large algae ball and rolled them to the coral pins! Combining competition with collaboration, everyone cheered for their friends as they took their turns.

The laughter echoed throughout the camp, showcasing the bonds forming between the kids as they navigated this quirky challenge. Campers shared tips and tricks for perfecting their bowling techniques, leading to friendly banter and impressive sportsmanship.

Teamwork and Collaborative Learning

A major focus at SpudBot Academy is fostering teamwork among campers and catering to the needs of each camper. Throughout the Algae Bowling game, campers were not only competing but also helping each other improve.

Counselors took this opportunity to teach essential skills related to problem-solving and critical thinking. Working together, campers brainstormed strategies, adjusted their programming, and learned from each other's successes and mistakes. By the end of the day, it was clear that each child had developed their programming skills and worked on their ability to engage positively with peers—key attributes that will serve them well beyond the camp’s walls.

Reflecting on a Day Full of Learning and Fun

As the sun began to set, marking the end of a productive Day 2, we had a surprise visitor at join us after hours - our very own Robot Inspector. Much like our FIRST Robotic Competition, the Robot Inspector looked through all of the assembled robots to assess their competition ready status.
